why words matter

What was the first word you ever said? Ball? Dog? Mummy? No?

Your first words are probably part of your family mythology, along with the stories of your birth and first steps. Why? Because words are the most powerful tool that anyone has.

If you're talking or writing an email to your friends, you try to be interesting. Why should business writing be any different?

Every time an organisation churns out a page of clunking copy, full of jargon, it's wasting an opportunity. Think about it. If your customers or shareholders actually enjoy reading your communications, they'll probably feel better about doing business with you. So why not pay a little more attention to the words your business uses? It's money and time well spent.

By the way, I'm told my first words were ‘Shut up'. I was probably objecting to a piece of business jargon.
